The Town of Breckenridge and Breckenridge Ski Resort announced mid December that a term sheet has been finalized which outlines details for a parking structure to be constructed on the South Gondola Lot in Breckenridge. The new parking structure is anticipated to break ground in spring of 2020 and is expected to create approximately 400 additional parking spaces, pending final Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) approval.

“We know that in-town parking is a critical need in Breckenridge and we look forward to partnering with the Town to bring new, incremental parking spaces to the South Gondola Lot for the community and our guests,” said John Buhler, vice president and chief operating officer at Breckenridge Ski Resort.

There is nothing like your first day of skiing for the season. Sure, the ski movie premiers are high energy affairs. First dusting of the peaks can get your heart racing as the lights, sights, smells and temperature all trigger our skier brains that the season is almost upon us. But first day brings the excitement up to a whole new level.

You awaken with that first day of school flutter in your stomach. Well -- even better than the school flutter. Choke down a super smoothie and oatmeal to keep you fueled for the day. Touch your toes a few times and give your quads a stretch -- you'll be spending a lot of time together for the next 8 months, so make nice now.

The vigorous powder day, the après ski activities, the delicious hot chili in the lodge, the Bernese Mountain dogs with snowflakes dusting their muzzles- these are all available in most ski towns- they are our universal ski culture touchstones. But each ski town has its own personality- the people and the events that define a community and a local culture. Early season in Breckenridge is defined by several beloved events. We kicked off with Breckenridge and Keystone both starting their lifts on November 9th. Copper adds to the fun on November 16th. A-Basin trounced everyone with an October 19th start. Thanks Ullr for the early season snow!

Summit County is surrounded by open space and trails. From Forest Service, Wilderness areas, Bureau of Land Management lands and county and local facilities, there are close to 300 miles of natural surface trails and 55 miles of county bike paths. In fact, three-quarters of county land is federally managed as National Forest.

All that land comes with amazing recreational opportunities and fuels an outdoor industry economic engine. But that’s not the only fuel that thousands of acres of trees provide. Yes, where there are trees there can be fire. (See our page on wildfire protection) In fact, lodge pole pines are prevalent in Summit County and count on fire as part of their regenerative cycle. So how can you best prepare when living nestled amongst…

There are reasons we in Summit County are used to being featured in the media  from early snowfalls being mentioned during NFL broadcasts to young Olympians making the late night talk show rounds, and heck, even being a very early mover in the push to decriminalize and then recreationally legalize marijuana.  Let’s just say Summit County is not a stranger to a little national attention.

But this recent round of notable news was strange enough to make Summit a cheeky punch line on Saturday Night Live.  A man was witnessed chasing a moose onto a median and then photographed by a passerby on Frisco Main Street. Chasing. A. Moose.

Moose weigh between 800 and 1,200 pounds, can be six feet tall at the shoulder and can be aggressive. They can run at 35…

Summit County cares about health. Kids, dogs and frogs have groups working for their health, and Summit is lucky enough to have a Forest Health Task Force, too.  This non-profit is currently looking for summer volunteers to help with forest projects. If you are a Summit County homeowner, joining the task force or its partner organization, Friends of the Dillon Range District, is a great way to learn about living in the wildland / urban interface.  There's more on this subject for homeowners on our Wildfire Protection page.

Olympic Alchemy changes Silver to Gold

Red Gerard changed Silverthorne to Goldthorne when he won the gold medal at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Games. The 17-year-old wunderkind and newly minted late night talk show hero took the gold in Snowboard Slopestyle, kicking off the Games -- being the first American to win gold -- and raising the bar for every 17-year-old snowboarder in the world.

Summit County is not a place that requires much excuse to throw a party. With so much to celebrate, imagine the festivities that Silverthorne will conjure to recognize the county's five Team USA heroes.

After Gerard’s gold, Kyle Mack earned Silver in Snowboard Big Air and also landed in 11th place in slopestyle.  A few weeks later Mack went on the take the top…
