For the past 28 winters, the some of the finest snow sculptors in the world have gathered in Breckenridge, Colorado for the International Snow Sculpture Championship. They come to face the daunting task of transforming, in 65 hours of intensive carving, a twelve-foot high, 50,000-pound cube of packed snow into an elusive and delicate work of art. They travel from all corners of the globe, some from places without snow, and with only simple tools and human intellect, to create art.Sculptures lit at night during the International Snow Sculpture Championships

From January 22 to January 29, 2018 you’ll be able to watch the process in the area around the Riverwalk Center, at 150 West Adams Avenue, in Breckenridge. The sculptures change daily, hourly on some days, and you can follow along and even join in for the voting on the…

If you are in the Northern Hemisphere as you are reading this, there is a good chance your thoughts have turned to winter pursuits. As holiday season and New Year’s come upon us, we often reflect on how we’ve spent our last year, and how we will spend the next. For many of us in the High Country, that inquiry comes back to this; “Did I ski enough powder?” The answer, of course, is always no. The clock is ticking. Book that ski vacation now.

There are so many flavors available within one ski season. Do you prefer the cracking, crisp energy of the brand new? Get here early- the snow coverage could be thinner than later in the season, but you’ll be rewarded with smaller crowds, and the palpable, early-season, first-day-of-school excitement.

Is…

We talk a lot in this space about the desirability of resort real estate, and how that affects values and investment potential. Plenty of special circumstances make property for sale in Breckenridge and surrounding Summit County more valuable than real estate in other resorts: gondola from town to mountain, high sales tax revenue per capital, community-sanctioned focus on recreation and the arts, the world’s highest deep-water marina, golf balls that fly far with high altitude assistance. One important Summit County local circumstance is that the valley floor — the private land in a county that's more than 80 percent public land — is reaching build-out. While we may be insulated by these amenities and limited supply, we are not immune up here to the…

Summer and fall seem to dominate the free activity landscape with all the hiking, farmers' markets, National Repertory Orchestra porch series concerts at our Breckenridge Associates office and such, but fear not fine friends — winter holds plenty of free and low cost options.

Breckenridge Ski Resort

Winter in the high country equals snow. In other parts of the county snowfall may bring groans about shoveling, while snow here generally means opportunities for sliding. But not all snow-sliding activities equal skiing and pricey lift tickets. (Revisit our past article on how to navigate lift ticket and season pass pricing to make the lift-served sliding more affordable.)

The best free snow-sliding adventure west of, well, anywhere? Carter Park Sledding Hill. Park in the…

Let me count the ways.

  1. Lifestyle. Invest in you. There exist any number of studies showing both the immediate health benefits of an active lifestyle, and of spending time in nature. In our opinion there is just no better place on the planet for ripping single track trails on your bike, making powder turns on your planks, hitting high altitude assisted golf shots under the gaze of majestic peaks, or just contemplating nature. They may call us hedonists, but we consistently rank among the healthiest populations in the country. Health is wealth.

  2. Appreciation. Because of our fortunate position, sitting in the midst of four world-class resorts, ringed by national forest, a short drive from the richly resourced, fast growing and…

The Breckenridge Craft Spirits Festival, also known as Still on the Hill, takes over the Riverwalk Center in downtown Breckenridge October 20-22, 2017.

Breckenridge is the proud home of the award winning Breckenridge Distillery, which opened in 2007 on the front side of the expanding craft spirits market. In fact, just 60 craft distillers existed in 2003, and today there are over 760. The thirst for the award-winning libations lead to a recent expansion and addition of a restaurant, making the new Breckenridge Distillery a real feather in the cap of the mountain town dining experience. Be sure to check them out in the new facility on Airport Road or pop by the Tasting Room for a quick nip on Main Street’s Blue River Plaza.
