For the past 28 winters, the some of the finest snow sculptors in the world have gathered in Breckenridge, Colorado for the International Snow Sculpture Championship. They come to face the daunting task of transforming, in 65 hours of intensive carving, a twelve-foot high, 50,000-pound cube of packed snow into an elusive and delicate work of art. Breckenridge Ski Resort just announced that they will be extending the 2013-2014 ski season.  Peak 6, Peak 7, and Peak 8 will be open until April 27th, 2014!  The snow conditions have been amazing, so they are letting the locals and visitors enjoy some of the best snow in Colorado for another week.

For all your New Orleans fanatics, the Town of Breckenridge has a celebration for you!  The first week of March, make sure to pack your beads, masks and boas as Mardi gras lovers take over the town.  Kicking off the week on March 1st, 2014, enjoy the annual Mardi gras ball at the Beaver Run Resort.  From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. indulge in a traditional New Orleans cuisine.  Dress up for the occasion and come with your beads, boas, and masks. The ball will have dancing, drinks, as well as the crowning of the Rex and Queen. If you missed it on the news, Breckenridge Ski Resort has had an epic year of snow!  Last Thursday and Friday, Ullr (the Norse snow god), opened up the skies and let the snowflakes fall.  And they continued to fall at a very fast rate for days. The snow was falling and accumulating 2-3 inches per hour.  The last time Breckenridge Ski Resort saw this much snow was over a decade ago.  The final snow totals over the last week came in at 40 inches.   The current base depth at the Breckenridge Ski Resort is 85 inches.  The season total for the Breckenridge Ski Resort is recorded at 267 inches, as of February 8th, 2014.

The International Snow Sculpture Championship returns to Breckenridge!  January 21st, 2014, marks the beginning of the renowned Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championship (ISSC).  Twenty ton blocks of snow will start to be assembled on January 13th.  Artists can spend up to 65 hours, shaping and sculpting the snow into masterpieces.  There will be 15 teams competing, coming from all ends of the world- from Italy to Mongolia, to the local US Team Breckenridge.   Most competitors have medaled in similar events before.  They will create impeccable works of art that you don’t want to miss seeing.

This year, the Town of Breckenridge has another awesome winter event to share with locals and visitors. Over the last several weeks, the construction of the Ice Castle in the Tiger Dredge parking lot has been taking shape. Over 20 million pounds of ice will pile up and turn into an Ice Castle worth seeing. The Ice Castle is constructed from snow and ice and it will grow throughout the winter. As the castle grows, tunnels are created and visitors can meander through them. You can also enjoy the towering, brightly lit icicles.
