What To Do in Breckenridge

Updated September 2020

Whether you just want to enjoy the fresh mountain air or want a lung-busting adventure, there are so many things to do in Breckenridge, even during our “off season” of fall (we like to think of it as “bonus season”). While our little town became widely known for the world-class ski resort in our backyard, we now draw visitors all year round. Locals and first timers alike have countless opportunities for fun in all seasons, 12 months of the year.

Year-Round

  • Isak the Troll: Who knew trolls could be so loved? Isak is the most beloved troll in Breckenridge and likely the whole state. He’s not to be missed no matter how short your time in Breckenridge is. His hideaway just east of the ice rink on Boreas Pass is quick and easy to get to.
  • Main Street: Postcard perfect with the best shopping and dining in the county. Mix in some mountain culture, mining history, and the backdrop of the Tenmile Range and our Main Street is a great place to be any day of the year. If you’re not in town and feeling a little homesick for Breck, you can check out our Main Street and mountain web cams and feel like you’re right here with us.
  • Rec Path: We’ve got 55 miles of very well-maintained rec path that runs mostly riverside along the Blue River, Snake River and Tenmile Creek. Cross-country ski in the winter, walk, bike/fat bike year round or whatever method works for you as long as it’s human powered. Class I E-bikes are the only motorized equipment allowed on the Rec Path.
  • Museums, exhibits and tours:  Visit the Ski Museum on Main Street, the outdoor Sawmill Museum on Boreas Pass, or the Washington Gold & Silver Mine on Illinois Gulch.
  • Ice Skating: The Stephen C. West ice rink is owned by the Town of Breck and is open year-round.
  • Rec Center: Another wonderful town-owned amenity that undergoes regular remodels and updates to maintain its state of the art climate.
  • Gondola: The gondola does close for moose-calving season in May/early June and after Labor Day until the ski resort opens for the season, but runs daily the rest of the year. Hours vary by season. Gondola rides never get old. It can be 26 minutes of fun with family or friends, or 26 minutes of quiet and peaceful solitude- your choice!
  • Hiking/Snowshoeing: Our trails can be explored no matter the season- you just need to change your footwear! The Sawmill Reservoir and Pence Miller trails are just two examples of great year-round trails. Since hiking is popular year-round (snowshoeing in the winter), we've created a list of Best Kept Secret Trails for those who want to hit the road less traveled.
  • Parks: Kids of all ages will love the High Line Railroad Park on Boreas Pass Road. Play, enjoy the scenery and trails, and learn some mining history at the same time. Additionally, kids can enjoy Kingdom Park on Airport Road, Prospector Park on Main Street and the incredible new award-winning River Park and Playground on Floradora Dr. just off Airport Road.
  • Arts District: Our Breckenridge arts district is a central hub of public art, art studios and classes, historic landmarks, and performance spaces. The Breckenridge Theater, the Speakeasy Movie Theater, and the Riverwalk Center all fall under the Arts District umbrella and each have their own lineup of events and/or shows throughout the year.
  • Country Boy Mine: Go 1000 feet deep to tour one of Colorado’s most famous mines, or hang around up top to meet the burros, hunt for treasure and so much more.
  • Fly fishing: Take a guided tour or ask your Breckenridge Associates agent for a great spot.

Winter

  • Skiing and Snowboarding: The beautiful Tenmile Range that borders the western side of Breckenridge is home to one of the most popular ski resorts in North America.
  • Sledding Hill: New for winter 2020-2021, the Town of Breck will open a new sledding hill on Airport Road! This will be in addition to the town’s other official sledding hill at Carter Park on the southern end of High Street in downtown Breckenridge. Both are gentle but fun slopes. Carter Park is surrounded by woods with a beautiful overlook of the town. There is no age limit for enjoyment of the sledding hills. Sleds can be purchased at multiple places around town or you can bring your own from home.
  • Snowcat Tour: For a high peaks tour on the ski resort, you’ll need to visit our partner mountain, Keystone, to the east. However, the Breckenridge Nordic Center offers a unique snowcat experience on their Peak 8 property.
  • Cross Country Skiing: Breckenridge has two Nordic centers and if that’s not enough, there are three more in the county. Lessons and equipment rentals are available for this low impact, full body workout for those who don’t want to send themselves downhill for alpine skiing.
  • Fat Biking: Fatter tires make it possible to ride in the snow- good thing since we have plenty of it!
  • Dog Sledding: Watching the dogs work is as much fun as riding the sled that they happily pull.
  • Sleigh Rides: Experience an old-fashioned horse-drawn sleigh ride with hot cocoa or dinner.

Summer

  • Stand up paddleboarding: Take a SUP yoga class or go out on your own at Maggie Pond.
  • Alpine Gardens: These town-owned gardens sit on the Blue River in between the dredge pond and the Riverwalk Center (very close to the rear of our office building on Main Street). Walk the interpretive trail or have a picnic by the river.
  • Mountain Biking: The mountain bike trails are so extensive that you can ride from Breckenridge to one of the surrounding towns and all around.
  • Patio/outdoor food and drinks: The summer weather is so pleasant that sitting inside is all sorts of wrong! For your home, see what you need to know about outdoor patio heating and fire pits.
  • Boreas Pass:  One of the top drives in the state. Beautiful overlooks, rocky cliffs, and historic mining remnants await.
  • Epic Discovery: Slides, mountain coasters, chairlift rides and more.
  • Biking: There are trails for the whole family or thrilling downhill mountain bike trails for advanced riders.
  • Frisco/Dillon Marinas: Kayak, canoe and pontoon boat rentals through end of September, weather dependent each year.

Bonus Season: FALL!

The golden season. It’s short but sweet. With the exception of the Gondola which stops running just after Labor Day, all year-round activities listed above are still available in the Fall. Think of summer as the rainbow and fall as the pot of gold found at the end. When the leaves turn yellow mid to late September, it’s truly a solid gold experience.
