Homes For Our Troops | July 13th Volunteer Day in Fairplay

Helping Injured Troops Rebuild Their Lives

Homes For Our Troops Volunteer Day in Fairplay, CO

Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) is a national nonprofit organization with the mission of supporting severely injured post-9/11 Veterans as they rebuild their lives. Constructing and donating specially adapted custom homes, tailored to the unique needs of Veterans with challenges like multiple limb amputations, paralysis, and severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), Homes For Our Troops’ goal is to facilitate independence and mobility for these Veterans. By providing mortgage-free house, Homes For Our Troops helps to alleviate financial burdens, empowering Veterans to focus on recovery, family, and the pursuit of new beginnings, stability, and purpose.

Creating Real Impact in Colorado

Since its inception in 2004, Homes For Our Troops has built over 371 specially adapted homes nationwide, with 22 of those homes built for injured Veterans in Colorado so far.

Rebuilding Lives in Fairplay, Colorado

Meet the two local Veterans who will be directly helped on Home For Our Troops July 13th Volunteer Day.

Army Specialist Eric Jordan

Inspired by his grandfathers' military service, Eric Jordan enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman following the 9/11 attacks. On November 11, 2004, in Ramadi, Iraq, his vehicle was struck by an IED, resulting in multiple injuries including spinal cord injury, paraplegia, and tinnitus. After being transferred to the Tampa VA, Eric faced a challenging recovery, relearning to speak and rebuild his strength and confidence through extensive therapy. Now medically retired, Eric enjoys time with his wife, Stephanie, but still faces daily obstacles due to the lack of home adaptations for his wheelchair. A specially adapted HFOT home will alleviate safety concerns and enhance their quality of life, allowing Eric to perform daily tasks like cooking without risk of injury and enabling the couple to enjoy more quality time together.

Staff Sergeant Brian Lowen

Feeling that traditional schooling would not lead him to a career he would love, Brian Lowen earned his GED and enlisted in the National Guard. On June 15, 2005, during his first deployment in Balad, Iraq, he was injured in a mortar attack, sustaining multiple injuries, including a traumatic brain injury. Despite these injuries, Brian continued to serve, retiring as a Sergeant First Class after six additional deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Now medically retired, he enjoys skiing, mountain biking, snowboarding, and golfing, and volunteers at an outdoor education center for adaptive sports. However, his current home is not suited to his needs, with non-adapted entrances and homemade ramps making wheelchair navigation difficult. A specially adapted custom home will be life-changing, providing a barrier-free, open floor plan, single-level layout, and automatic door openers, enabling Brian to regain his independence and devote more time to helping other veterans.
