Founded in Breckenridge 30 years ago and proudly sponsored by Breckenridge Associates since the beginning, the International Snow Sculpture Championships will be held in downtown Breckenridge January 20 through 29, 2020.
This year’s event attracted 42 applications, and without doubt, the 16 teams selected from this extensive and talented field will create the most exciting and competitive event ever produced. Participating teams represent 12 countries: Argentina, China, Ecuador, France, Germany, Great Britain, Mexico, Mongolia, India, Switzerland and Turkey, as well as four U. S. teams including our very own Team Breckenridge!
Artists use our local and abundant natural resource—snow!—combining art and sport while transforming 25-ton, 10 by 10 foot wide by 12 foot high blocks of snow into elaborate snow masterpieces during the 90-hour event. The rules stipulate that artists may use only hand tools, ingenuity, and inspiration to bring their creations to life. No power tools allowed!
The competition’s sculpting days take place from January 20 through January 24 with viewing days January 24 through January 29. Stroll by the competition area during the entire event to watch these incredible sculptures come to life.
