Friends of the Dillon Ranger District is hosting a variety of free events—from guided hikes and art workshops to educational talks and family-friendly outings. Whether you're a long-time local or just visiting, there's something for everyone to enjoy and explore.

1. Art in Nature | August 7th

Location: Mesa Cortina Trail - 559 Aspen Drive, Silverthorne

Join local artist Agostina Zampieri for a unique on-trail workshop that blends creativity with mindful observation. Designed to deepen your connection with the natural world, this guided experience encourages you to explore and express nature’s details through various art mediums. Offered in both English and Spanish, this event is a celebration of creativity, culture, and the outdoors.

2. Skill Series: Sky Signs | August 13th  

Location: Dillon Town Hall - 275 Lake Dillon Drive, Dillon

Join longtime Summit County local Craig Simson for an engaging clinic on how to interpret weather patterns and make informed decisions for your outdoor adventures. With decades of experience in skiing, sailing, and mountain life, Craig will teach you how to read the sky, use point forecasts, and access valuable weather resources. Ideal for anyone looking to enhance their backcountry awareness and planning skills.

3. Ute History Presentation with Aspen Historical Society | August 22nd  

Location: Edwin Carter Museum - 111 N Ridge Street, Breckenridge

Explore the history and culture of Colorado’s original inhabitants in a presentation by Northern Ute tribal member Skyler Lomahaftewa and the Aspen Historical Society, co-sponsored by Breckenridge History.

4. Forest Flow: Yoga and Mindfulness Walk | August 23rd

Location: Keystone Gulch Trailhead – Keystone

Slow down and reconnect with nature on a mindful hike guided by local yoga instructor Lili Girodie. Along the trail, you'll pause for gentle movement, breathwork, and meditation to deepen your awareness of the sights and sounds around you. Wear comfortable clothes, bring water and layers, and come with curiosity.

5. Edible Wild Berries Hiking Tour | August 26th 

Location: Lower McCullough Gulch Trail - Blue River

Join FDRD’s Maddie Retrosi for a late-summer hike in search of wild berries at their seasonal peak. This 2.5-mile round-trip tour along McCullough Gulch offers a delicious way to explore nature's bounty while learning about local edible plants. Come prepared for changing mountain weather and be ready to taste what the trail has to offer!

6. Tails on Trails: Dog-Friendly Hike | August 30th  

Location: Keystone Gulch Trailhead – Keystone

Join dog trainer Jean DeCesaris for a guided, dog-friendly hike focused on trail etiquette, canine behavior, and the role our pets play in the outdoor ecosystem. This hike is ideal for well-socialized, leashed dogs and their humans—just one pup per handler, please! Don’t forget water, treats, and poop bags for your furry hiking companion.

7. Geology Bike Tour: Frisco to Keystone | September 3rd 

Location: Giberson Day Use Parking Area - Dillon Dam Road, Frisco

Pedal from Frisco to Keystone on a guided geology tour with experts Bob Rall and Hilary Downes, who will highlight features like terminal moraines, igneous intrusions, and ancient marine sediments along the way. This 12-mile ride starts at the Giberson Day Use Lot and ends at the Power Line parking lot on Montezuma Road. Bring your own bike (ebikes welcome) and plan for a return shuttle or ride back.

8. Hiking the Wild Path of Silent Bob | September 5th

Location: Rainbow Lake Trailhead, Zach’s Stop – Temple Trail, Frisco

Join CSU Extension Director Dan Schroder for an off-trail adventure to “Silent Bob,” one of Summit County’s most iconic avalanche paths. This guided hike begins near Miner’s Creek and winds through dense brush and quiet forest to a striking overlook of the avalanche scarp. Meet at Zach’s Stop Trailhead at 8am to begin this unique exploration.
